Overview

Lumen strips the desk lamp down to its essence: light, arm, base. No visible screws, no exposed wires, no clutter. The entire lamp is machined from two pieces of aluminum, with LED array and electronics fully integrated. We designed the product, developed the CNC manufacturing process, and engineered the integrated electronics.

Challenge

Hiding all hardware in a lamp with articulating joints is an engineering puzzle. Traditional lamps use visible hinges, exposed cables, and bolt-on bases. The client wanted none of that. The LED array needed to deliver tunable 2700K-6500K color temperature with a CRI above 95 — medical-grade color accuracy in a consumer product.

Approach

We developed a friction-hinge system concealed within the arm profile. Internal cable routing through the arm's hollow core eliminates visible wiring. The base uses a weighted magnet mount — no screws, no clamps. A custom LED PCB with phosphor-tuned diodes achieves CRI 97 across the full color temperature range, controlled by a single capacitive touch point on the base.

Outcome

Lumen won an iF Design Award and was featured in Wallpaper* magazine's annual design issue. The lamp sells for $395 and has become a staple in architecture and design studios. The friction-hinge system has been patented and licensed for use in two other product categories.
