Overview
Vessel combines a double-wall stainless steel bottle with a proprietary filter pod system. Each pod — made from compostable bioplastic — flavors and filters water for 30 refills before composting in 90 days. We designed the bottle, engineered the pod system, and developed the packaging.
Challenge
The filter pod needed to deliver consistent flavor across 30 uses while being genuinely compostable — not just 'industrial compostable' but backyard-bin compostable. The pod-bottle interface had to be watertight, easy to insert, and satisfying to click in — the tactile experience drives repurchase.
Approach
We developed a PLA-based bioplastic formulation with embedded activated carbon and natural flavor compounds. The pod geometry uses a bayonet mount with an O-ring seal — reliable, tactile, and composed of only compostable materials. The bottle itself features a magnetic cap alignment system that makes one-handed operation intuitive.
Outcome
Vessel has sold 200K bottles and 2M filter pods. The pods have been independently verified to fully compost in 90 days in home composting conditions. The product was featured in Fast Company's Innovation by Design awards.
